B2Gold hit by blockade at Nicaragua mine
Operations at B2Gold's El Limón mine in Nicaragua have been halted as a result of a blockade.
Access to the mine and process facility in the northwest of the country has been blocked since September 28 by a group of workers, community members and other people not affiliated with the mine, the company said.
The blockade was started following the dismissal of three employees involved in initiating prior blockades.
Several attempts by the company, two of its unions and the government to find a solution have so far been unsuccessful, B2Gold said.
Production to date has met or exceeded expectations, and El Limón is expected to meet 2015 guidance of 55,000-65,000oz gold, or 11% of B2Gold's total output, if a timely resolution is reached.
El Limón produced 15,686oz gold in Q2, up from 11,122oz in the prior-year quarter.
HISTORY OF CONFLICT
The blockade is the fourth so far this year at El Limón, including a four-day stoppage over disability benefits in Q1.
Police and civilians were injured in protests over power supply problems in local communities in May, according to press reports at the time.
The mine has a history of conflicts dating back prior to its acquisition by B2Gold in 2009, the company said.
The announcement follows local press reports of protests last Sunday against the company's planned development of a gold project in Rancho Grande, in the north of the country.
B2Gold also has the La Libertad mine in Nicaragua, the Gramalote gold project in Colombia and mines in the Philippines and Namibia.
