Brazilian carriers ordered to sort out cables on São Paulo poles
Brazilian telecom and electricity regulators Anatel and Aneel, through their conflict resolution commission, ordered operators Vivo, Claro, TIMand Oi to regularize their cable networks installed on 2,129 poles of power distributor AES Eletropaulo.
The commission, Anatel said in a release, authorized the distributor to withdraw cables and equipment from providers which, within 90 days, refuse or ignore the need for regularization.
This measure tackles "irregular occupation" of poles and vows "to guarantee mechanical and electrical safety of the installations, with adjustments in fixing cables and telecommunications equipment in line with the technical standards in force," reported Anatel.
The commission ruling follows complaints AES Eletropaulo filed in 2016 within Aneel, asking the regulators to solve the standoff between telecommunication providers.
The commission is a permanent body formed by two representatives from each agency – Anatel, Aneel and national oil regulator ANP – to jointly resolve conflicts between players in the electric power, telecommunications and oil sectors.
BURYING CABLES
In related news, Anatel president Juarez Quadros has opposed a suggestion from an Anatel board member regarding the use of resources from the universalization telecom fund Fust to bury overhead cables in cities.
According to Quadros, operators should use their own resources to bury the infrastructure. He argues that burying cables is a matter of service quality, not of service expansion –which is the ultimate goal of the Fust fund.
The topic is still under discussion within the agency.
