Brazil's Easy Taxi merges ops with Colombia's Tappsi
Taxi mobile apps Easy Taxi, from Brazil, and Colombia's Tappsi have merged their operations.
The deal was announced Tuesday (Dec. 15) in Colombian capital Bogotá, but the financial terms were not revealed.
Together, the two firms will boast a base of 500,000 registered taxi drivers and 8mn rides per month, and their apps have been downloaded 25mn times, Easy Taxi said in a statement.
The staffs and brands of the companies will remain separate. Juan Salcedo will remain CEO of Tappsi, while Dennis Wang will continue to lead Easy Taxi globally.
Currently, despite the strong growth of the model, still only 15% of all taxi rides in Latin America are called from mobile apps, according to the Brazilian firm.
Easy Taxi said the merger will enable "sharing and coordination of best practices and thus continuously improving service levels on board taxis."
Among the reported benefits from the deal are customer service-focused training and joint improvement of safety initiatives throughout the industry.
In 2013, Tappsi was among some 10 IT companies selected by Colombian ICT ministryMintic and startup support firms Apps.co and HuBOG for an "internship" program in Silicon Valley, California.
Latin American leader Easy Taxi, folr its part, was created in 2011, but became widespread only than two years later. It is nowadays in more than 30 countries.
Its main rival is Brazil's 99Taxis, which recently announced a new category of"premium" cabs for São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro passengers.
