Chile PC market falls by 11% in Q2 while all-in-one, ultraslim segments grow

Chile's PC market continued to struggle in Q2, shrinking by 11% compared to the same period in 2012 as emerging segments such as all-in-ones and ultraslim laptops grew, but desktop and laptop sales continued to fall, IDC said in a release.

The contracting PC market in Chile is largely due to slow replacement cycles for these devices, both in the consumer and enterprise segments, as well as strong sales of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, according to IDC Chile's consumer and mobile device analyst Cristián Peña.

Some 6.44mn smartphones are expected to be shipped to Chile in 2013, while the number of tablets shipped to the country is expected to reach 400,000 in Q4 alone, the analyst said previously.

The total number of PCs sold in Chile during Q2 reached around 420,000 units, the consultancy firm added.

Laptop sales fell by 18.1% to 261,266 units in the quarter, of which 78% were purchased by the enterprise segment and the remainder by the consumer segment.

Meanwhile, traditional desktop sales fell by 24.3% to 51,524 units, of which 72.4% were purchased by the enterprise segment and the remainder by the consumer segment.

However, some emerging segments did see growth. The ultraslim laptop segment increased its sales more than seven-fold in the quarter to 69,622 units - largely purchased by the consumer segment - while the all-in-one segment increased sales by 32.7% to 36,311 units in the quarter, again with highest demand from the consumer segment.

The total PC market is expected to reach 1.79mn units in the full year 2013, down 11.4% on the previous year.

The declines are expected to continue in 2014, albeit at a slower pace, with the total market set to fall by 1.1% next year compared to 2013.
