Chile’s Minera Meridian submits EIA for US$172mn El Peñón extension
Chilean mining firm Minera Meridian has submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a US$172mn extension of operations at the El Peñón underground gold and silver mine in Antofagasta region.
The project involves expanding mining of veins in three sectors, prolonging the lifespan of the mine’s processing and energy generation plants, increasing tailings dam capacity, and updating storage and transport systems, according to the EIA.
The works will extend operations for nine years and involve extraction of nearly 5.5Mt of ore.
Meridian, which is owned by Canada’s Yamana Gold, plans to start the works in August.
The mine produced 159,515oz of gold and 4.3Moz of silver in 2019.
