Claro disconnects 5% of Chilean mobile subscribers in 3Q13

Mexican telecoms giant América Móvil's (NYSE: AMX) Chilean subsidiary Claro disconnected 335,000 wireless subscribers in 3Q13 as they were not generating enough traffic, América Móvil's latest financial report said.

The disconnections were the result of changing consumer activity and not a specific company strategy, Claro product development manager Lorena Contreras told local newspaper Diario Financiero. Many users buy prepaid plans as part of their purchase of new phones and never use the credit, Contreras added.

Total 3Q13 disconnections amounted to roughly 5% of Claro's subscribers and left the firm with 5.9mn clients at the end of September.

"[Claro's] postpaid base however, was up 12.8% over the year with net additions of 27,000. RGUs were 1.1mn at the end of the quarter, 7.1% more than at the beginning of the year," América Móvil said.
