Codelco set to file legal action against "illegal" Chuquicamata smelter strikers

Chilean state copper producer Codelco has announced it will file legal charges against the workers currently on strike at the smelter facilities of its Chuquicamata division in northern region II, the company said in a statement.

The charges will be filed against workers that have threatened the drivers trucking copper concentrate to the facilities. The threatened workers are not Codelco workers but rather subcontracted workers, who were unable to carry out their day-to-day work.

Workers at the smelter facilities have been on strike since December 3. Workers are demanding an extraordinary bonus of 10mn pesos (US$18,703) in order to operate the smelter at full capacity. As a result of the strike, Chuquicamata has stopped producing between 1,300 and 1,400t of copper anodes per day.

Chuquicamata's general manager, Juan Carlos Avendaño, called the work stoppage an illegal strike as it violates the collective contract between the company and its workers. Avendaño also announced that they have issued reprimand letters to all those involved in the strike.
