Colombia awards US$187mn bridge-building contract

Colombian highway authority Invías has awarded the US$187mn contract for the construction of three bridges on the Ciénaga-Barranquilla highway to the consortium Viaducto Ciénaga del Magdalena.

The consortium is formed by the companies Mincivil and SP Ingenieros.

The project involves building three bridges, of 5km, 4km and 1km in length, respectively, which will benefit more than 970,000 users of the highway, helping to improve links between Santa Marta, Barranquilla and Cartagena, the three biggest cities on Colombia's Caribbean coast.

The works to be carried out in Magdalena department are part of the government's 135tn-peso (US$35.7bn) Commitment to Colombia (Compromiso por Colombia) economic recovery plan announced in 2020, which includes some 545 projects in 27 different programs that are intended to create 4.4mn jobs.
