Colombia's Ecopetrol completes Cartagena refinery expansion
Colombian state oil company Ecopetrol has completed expansion works at its Reficar oil refinery in Cartagena as it seeks to meet rising domestic fuel demand, the company said on Wednesday.
The project, which began in 2019, has seen capacity at the facility rise from 150,000b/d to 200,000b/d, according to an Ecopetrol statement.
"This expansion consolidates the Cartagena refinery as a strategic asset to guarantee Colombia's energy sovereignty," CEO Felipe Bayón said.
He added that the refinery would now produce diesel and gasoline with sulfur content levels below 100 parts per million (ppm) and 50ppm, respectively.
Ecopetrol previously said the project, which integrated the refinery's original 80,000b/d crude unit with the avant-garde 165,000b/d Reficar complex, would require investment of US$180mn.
