Congress okays 2 commissions to probe Brazil dam collapse

Due to the lack of an agreement between lower house representatives and senators, the Brazilian congress will have two commissions investigating mining giant Vale's tailings dam collapse in Brumadinho (pictured), Minas Gerais state.

The head of the lower house, Rodrigo Maia, authorized the setting up of a commission despite the senate already having one, news service EPBR reported.

At its first meeting, the senate commission agreed to convene the former CEO of Vale, Fábio Schvartsman, who was removed from post on March 2, and current chief executive Eduardo Bartolomeo.

The two will testify on a date yet to be decided, the report said.

The rapporteur for the upper house commission, Carlos Viana, is expected to present a working proposal on March 19.

Viana tweeted on Friday that it is necessary to perfect legislation on dams and give the government more room to regulate the mining industry.

"We cannot let the mining sector self-regulate and, after this tragedy, just come and apologize," he said.

The senate commission also said its members will visit five tailings dams in Minas Gerais.

The tailings dam at Vale's Feijão iron ore operation collapsed on January 25, leaving around 200 people dead, with more than 100 still missing.
