Digitization, metallurgical innovation the challenges for Peru's mining industry
Digitization and metallurgy innovation are two of the main challenges for the Peruvian mining industry, which is having to deal with increasingly low mineral grades.
Despite the various problems that the domestic mining industry faces, the sector has a very promising future in Peru, but new deposits that are set to be developed in the coming years will have to use technology and innovation to become more efficient in order to address dwindling mineral grades and operations that take place at ever deeper levels, Roque Benavides, chairman of mining company Buenaventura, said during the III Minera Sur 2020 mining conference.
At the moment Buenaventura is operating a metallurgical innovation center where it is developing new processes to handle arsenical copper and to treat complex minerals in order to generate greater added value
Benavides cited the case of the Uchucchagua silver, lead and zinc mine, operated by Buenaventura in the Oyón district of Lima region, where the ore produced has high manganese content, which requires additional treatments.
The executive also added that the company wants to make its US$422mn San Gabriel gold project, located in Moquegua region, an example for modern mining by using solar energy, high levels of automation and even relying on the internet of things.
“We expect to have 100% of the energy we consume in San Gabriel coming from solar energy. Apparently the site is ideal to build a park of solar panels that will allow us to have electric vehicles and digital connectivity connected to the internet of things and we will try to automate things as much as possible," said Benavides.
According to Buenaventura project manager Renzo Macher, the construction of San Gabriel should begin next April and will be completed in 3Q23, with production set to start in 2024.
San Gabriel is expected to operate for 10 years and process some 3,000t/d of ore.
