Ecuador-Peru interconnection design to begin in April
Following a call for expressions of interest, Ecuador’s government has invited international consultancy companies to conduct design studies for a planned 500kV power interconnection with Peru.
The potential bidders for the IDB-financed contract are Oficina Técnica Grupo Alta Tensión-Isastur Ingenieria (Spain), Esin Consultora-Tranelsa-Tecnolatina-ATEC-Serconel (Argentina), Cesel-Cointec-Tecnolatina (Peru), Fichtner-Integral (Germany), Manitoba Hydro International-Burns & McDonnell (US) and Changjiang Institute of Survey Planning Design and Research, according to information from Transelectric, the transmission unit of Ecuador’s state power holding company Celec.
The work will cover the following proposed infrastructure: new 500kV lines Chorrillos-Pasaje (211km) and Pasaje-Frontera (74km); the sectioning (1.8km) of the 230kV Minas San Francisco La Unión-San Idelfonso line; the expansion of the 500kV Chorrillos substation; and the new 500/230kV Pasaje substation.
Offers for the US$2.11mn, 300-day contract are due in February with work scheduled to begin in April.
A limited-capacity link (the 220kV Zorritos-Machala line depicted below) already exists between Ecuador and Peru.
The further integration of the countries’ grids falls under the umbrella of the Andean power interconnection initiative SINEA.

Meanwhile, company Generación Eléctrica Rio Biavo refiled a detailed EIS with Peru’s environmental certification service for sustainable investments Senace for the 302MW Alto Biavo hydro project.
The US$617mn run-of-the-river plant is planned for the north-central region of San Martín and would take 57 months to complete.
Components include a machine house to hold four Francis-type turbines, a water transport tunnel and a discharge canal, along with a 200km, 220kV transmission line which would connect to the national grid at the Fernando Belaunde substation.
