Honduran grid requires US$364mn to cover demand

Required investment to reduce losses and improve reliability and service quality of Honduras’ power transmission grid reaches US$364mn, according to system operator ODS.

In a presentation, ODS, which took over administration of the grid in June as part of the sector’s overhaul, highlights that US$252mn corresponds to new projects without financing and US$112mn to previously identified projects with financing.

The operator expects that an increase in dispatch capacity will mitigate the impact of contingencies on electricity supply, boost hydropower shipments and sustain imports from the regional power market (MER).

Planned works include lines and substations and the installation of transformers.

Honduras' current grid includes 1,015km of 230kV lines, 1,025km of 138kV lines and 700km of 69kV lines.

In a related note, Leonardo Deras, the manager of state power company Enee, said that operations of the 104MW Patuca III hydro plant, which had been scheduled to come online next quarter, will be postponed as the dam is at 30% capacity, local news outlet Hondudiario reported.

Startup will be pushed back until the arrival of rains in May to test the floodgates and turbines, he added.

Also from Central America, Panama’s state power transmission Etesa cancelled the tender for the 230kV Panamá II-Chepo line project to modify technical specifications. A new call is expected.

And MER regulator CRIE authorized the connection to the regional transmission network of the installed capacity increase at Hydro Caisán’s El Alto hydro, which now boasts 72.2MW versus the previous 67.3MW.
