Honduras issues smart grid call as part of loss reduction push

Honduras’ state power company Enee has launched bidding to supply advanced metering infrastructure.

The call for 50,000 smart meters and associated equipment falls under the government’s national electricity loss reduction program (PNRP), which has been stepped up to address the sector’s crisis.

Participants must show they have installed over 40,000 of the same meters and sold more than 500,000 units in other countries.

Proposals are due August 9, according to procurement information available here and in the Documents box in the upper right hand corner.

Authorities highlight that PNRP has helped curb losses, a figure questioned by local think tank ASJ which argues that losses have increased since the program began in November, and that these totaled 17.8bn lempiras (US$721mn) in 2022.

PNRP envisions reducing losses to 28% this year and 18% in 2026.

In December, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei) disbursed US$250mn to Honduras to strengthen the sector, including loss reduction.
