LatAm telecommunications moving 'like never before'
Changes in the telecommunications ecosystem with the entry of InfraCos, mergers and acquisitions, and spectrum auctions for 5G are driving the telecommunications market in Latin America, according to the CTO for the region at Infinera.
"In Latin America there's super-fast growth in bandwidth," Andrés Madero told BNamericas.
Madero said the region is moving "like never before" and that the level of activity has not been seen "for at least six years."
The CTO said Infinera is closing deals with new clients that will be announced shortly, so he preferred to keep their names close to his chest.
Infinera has major submarine cable agreements and its clients include Seaborn and EllaLink.
One of the reasons for the heightened activity in Latin America has to do with the consolidation that is happening in the market, Madero said. “The ecosystem is changing with greater specialization and cooperation. In this process, the first thing that always comes out is 'how do we continue to deliver more bandwidth, but cheaper?' Then there's the need to make a change in technology,” he said.
Madero said many companies in Latin America that have been subject to mergers or acquisitions are evaluating architecture changes, adding that California-based Infinera is working with some customers in this regard.
He also said it is advising on the design of the Humboldt submarine cable that will connect Chile with Australia, in addition to other submarine projects in the region.
Madero also said that some companies in Latin America are looking at changing equipment due to the geopolitical situation and suspicions that Asian companies could have security problems.
However, he added that although it is an issue that operators often take into account, it is not a decisive factor in a purchase.
The price is crucial but lately, and due to the interruptions in supply chains, the decisive factor is the ability to offer the equipment quickly, according to Madero.
NEW PRODUCTS
Infinera made two major announcements this year in preparation for its portfolio to address increased bandwidth demand: the ICE-XR suite of intelligent coherent pluggable solutions – which the company claims can provide up to a 70% reduction in network costs – and ICE6 Turbo, a photonic engine upgrade that allows operations on two streams, each 800Gbps for a total of 1.6Tbps.
The new engine enables 30% higher performance than current levels and reduces the amount of hardware required by the network.
ICE6 is Infinera's most in-demand kit, in Latin America it is used by Ufinet for backhaul. "The two largest operators in Latin America" are also evaluating this product, Madero said.
Both products "are based on our development of digital carriers, which is where much of our research and development funds have gone," he added.
Infinera manufactures its own photonic and plug-in engines, the CTO said.
