Mexican chemical and petrochemicals firm Mexichem (BMV: MEXCHEM) and Occidental Chemical Corporation (OxyChem) have awarded CB&I (NYSE: CBI) a US$1bn contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of an ethane cracker and associated utilities and offsites at OxyChem's complex in Ingleside, Texas.

The cracker will have the capacity to produce approximately 1.2bn pounds (544,319t) a year of ethylene.

Feedstock for the cracker is anticipated to be ethane derived from domestic shale gas, CB&I said in a statement.

Construction is scheduled to begin mid-2015 and commercial operations the first quarter of 2017, Mexichem and OxyChem said previously.

CB&I provided the technology license and basic engineering for the ethylene technology, five SRT (short residence time) cracking heaters and the front end engineering and design (FEED) services.
