Mexico updates spending on Texcoco Park

Mexico’s water authority Conagua has awarded 3.25bn pesos (about US$160mn) in contracts so far for the almost 20bn-peso Lake Texcoco park (PELT) on the outskirts of Mexico City, according to a release.

The agency said the amount awarded represents 71.2% progress in relation to the programmed 4.57bn pesos.

The government assigned 2.96bn pesos for the park in its 2023 budget, while total investment is put at 19.3bn pesos. Overall, the federal government has allocated 6.1bn pesos to the project, while more than 10bn pesos have been programmed for the coming years.

PELT is being built in the area where the 2,500ha Texcoco airport was planned, but covering 12,500ha and including lagoons and wetlands of the Nabor Carrillo lake and the Jalapango lagoon, among other features. It is planned to be 15 times bigger than Mexico City’s Chapultepec Park and is expected to become the world’s biggest city park.
