Newspaper: Alcoa in power price talks with Eletronorte

Bnamericas Published: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
The Brazilian division of US aluminum giant Alcoa (NYSE: AA) is negotiating electricity supply contracts with federal power generator Eletronorte, business daily Valor Economico reported. Eletronorte has 750MW available from two new turbines set to start operations this year at its Tucurui hydroelectric plant in northern Brazil, the paper said. Alcoa plans to up production at its Alumar plant from 210,000t/y to 270,000t/y and build a third smelter in the region with installed capacity of 500,000t/y, but the latter project is said to be dependent on the cost of energy. Tucurui already supplies Alcoa's current operations in the region. Pittsburgh-based Alcoa is the world's largest aluminum producer. Its Brazilian operations also include the Pocos de Caldas smelter.
