Peru's Minsur seeks approval for San Rafael tin mine drilling

Peruvian miner Minsur plans to install 18 rigs for hydrogeological and geothermal drilling at its San Rafael underground tin mine in Puno region.

Minsur presented a supporting technical report (ITS) for the work to the environmental certification service for sustainable investments (Senace).

In the report, the company says it will invest US$27.5mn in the drilling campaign with the objective of complementing information on the geotechnical characteristics of the terrain and improving hydrogeological knowledge of the area.

The document also clarifies that the work will not modify the current tin metallurgical process at the San Rafael concentrator plant or the reuse of tailings.

An ITS is presented when modifications introduced to a project with environmental approval already granted are not expected to cause a significant environmental impact.

Tin in concentrate production at San Rafael was 4,365t in Q1, down 13% on the same period last year.

The mine, in the eastern part of the Andes mountains, is the main tin producer in South America and the fourth biggest in the world.

According to Minsur, the asset produces about 10% of the tin available worldwide.

The Peruvian miner announced last year that it intended to boost efficiency of its operational control and security processes with artificial intelligence projects, such as monitoring the quality of effluent water from San Rafael.
