Petroperú fuel market share falls to five-year low

Peru's national oil company Petroperú saw its fuel market share fall to a five-year low in the first quarter.

The latest metrics from the NOC reveal that its share in 1Q26 stood at 20%, versus 25% in 2025 and 2024, 26% in 2023 and 31% in 2022.

Repsol and its La Pampilla refinery are Peru's principal fuel suppliers.

"This evolution is mainly due to lower availability of finished products at the NRT [new Talara refinery], as a result of liquidity constraints that affected the timely supply of crude oil for processing, as well as scheduled shutdowns of certain units for maintenance," said Petroperú, commenting on its domestic fuel sales drop in the first three months of 2026.

This month, the government approved extraordinary measures to address hydrocarbons supply, including a new financing scheme of up to US$2bn from international private banks to guarantee the operability of financially strapped Petroperú.

The company's domestic and export fuel sales in the first quarter totaled 65,000b/d and 6,000b/d, respectively, down 21% and 79% year-on-year.

The country's total fuel sales in March averaged 333,060b/d, led by diesel with 51.1%, followed by LPG (20.4%) and gasoline/gasohol (20.1%), according to the energy and mines ministry.
