Stefanini helps Brazil police track chemicals

IT multinational Stefanini is helping Brazil’s federal police track controlled chemicals as part of the fight against illegal synthetic drugs.

The Siproquim 2 database gathers data – ranging from the volume to the type of chemicals traded – from drug companies, laboratories and suppliers. It went live in September, after Stefanini was awarded a contract worth 9.5mn reais (US$2.33mn) with the federal police’s IT and innovation department through a tender.

The platform facilitates simple license renewal requests and cross-checks data with other regulatory bodies. It is integrated with the federal revenue service and may soon be linked with the health inspection agency, the attorney general’s office and the economy ministry.

After some initial technical glitches that the federal police attributed to a significant number of access requests by users, a Stefanini spokesperson told BNamericas that the system now functions normally.

In recent years the federal police has launched several major investigations to tackle the diversion of chemicals for the drug trade.

Marcos Camargo, head of the association of federal crime experts, recently said that Brazil lacks accurate data on the amount of illicit substances circulating in the market.
