TIM Brasil activates the first 5G antennas in Paraná
Press Release
By TIM
Curitiba, April 5, 2022 – In a meeting with the governor of Paraná, Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior, and the mayor of Curitiba, Rafael Greca, the CEO of TIM Brasil, Alberto Griselli, announces today the activation of the first 5G antennas in Paraná.
The equipment is located in Curitiba, in the Parque Barigui and Palácio Iguaçu areas, and was made available on the 2.3 GHz SA frequency (S tandalone ) so that customers in these regions can now enjoy a differentiated experience, which will evolve with the arrival of 5G SA at 3.5 GHz as of June, according to Anatel's schedule.
The 3.5 GHz band, acquired by TIM, will be essential to provide high speed and very low latency to users, and mainly to massify and revolutionize the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in several fundamental sectors to leverage the economy of the Parents.
“TIM has invested heavily in preparing for the arrival of 5G, a technology that will accelerate the process of digital transformation in cities, stimulate business generation and give Brazilians more opportunities. The choice of Curitiba as the first city in the South to receive TIM's 5G Standalone antennas reaffirms our historical and increasingly consolidated connection with the city and the State”, explains TIM's CEO, Alberto Griselli.
TIM, which is the leader in the mobile telephony market in Paraná and Curitiba, had already announced, in March, the choice of the capital of Paraná for the development of the “Cidade 5G” project. The collaboration agreement (MoU) – with Huawei – was signed during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The idea is to implement 5G networks, anticipating the evolution of technology, monitoring networks and improving the user experience. The agreement is valid for two years and can be extended, and the first tests must be completed by December 2023.
“Paraná has been characterized by being the cradle of innovation in the country and this choice by TIM reinforces the work we have been developing over these more than three years. Seeking modernity, this 5G tool will be essential for new achievements and to bring people even closer together. The population of Paraná is the main beneficiary of this joint action between the Government of Paraná, the City Hall of Curitiba and TIM. It is a historic moment for the technology of Paraná and Brazil", highlights Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior, governor of Paraná.
“Curitiba once again took the lead in implementing the new 5G technology. In 2019, when we modernized the regulations for installing telephony antennas, the city made it possible and faster to operate 5G, a model that will require up to 10 times more antennas than 4G. Now we will start to see the practical results, which open a new world of services for the population”, says the mayor of Curitiba, Rafael Greca.
TIM in Paraná
TIM leads different segments in Paraná. Currently, the operator is the leader in the mobile telephony market in the State, with 52.1% (6.9 million customers). The operator is also ahead in 4G coverage, present in 100% of the 399 cities in Paraná and in the 4.5G technology network, already implemented in 235 municipalities. TIM also took the lead, in Curitiba, with the offer of 5G DSS (which uses 5G over 4G frequencies). The activation of this network is part of TIM's strategy - started in 2019 - to provide customers, without additional costs, with a differentiated connectivity experience, which must now evolve with the revolutionary arrival of 5G in the country.
TIM is also working on strengthening 4G coverage, especially on roads. The installed infrastructure will cover 2,800 kilometers of highways that pass through the state, in addition to 355 districts and towns and eight resorts, also focusing on the region's tourism development. Of the 243 TIM 4G sites planned, 180 have already been installed (54 being activated in 2021). Another nine are planned for 2022.
To meet this volume of TIM customers in Paraná, the operator currently has more than 18,000 points of sale in all regions of the state, including its own stores, resellers and small and large retailers.
