Brazilian mobile telephony operator TIM (NYSE: TSU) has signed an agreement with Twitter under which TIM's subscribers will be able to access and navigate Twitter's mobile site at no charge, the telco said in a statement.

"TIM is always looking for partnerships with companies with innovation as one of their main pillars. We have been working with Twitter since 2008 and this new action strengthens our partnership even more," TIM internet, VAS and handset director Fábio Cristilli said.

TIM also said that according to data from Twitter, Brazil has the largest base of users in Latin America. Also, half of the accesses to the social network in Brazil are through smartphones.

TIM ended August with 72.9mn accesses (27.2% share), up from 72.7mn in the previous month, according to data from the country's telecoms services watchdog Anatel.

The mobile carrier is fully owned by European telco Telecom Italia (NYSE: TI).

Meanwhile, Brazilian carrier Claro, owned by Mexican giant América Móvil (NYSE: AMX) may announce a similar agreement with Twitter in the future. During a press conference at telecoms exhibition Futurecom, which is taking place this week in Río de Janeiro, Brazil, Claro SVA director Alexandre Olivari told reporters that the telco is currently in negotiations with Twitter for a similar agreement.
