Ultra-broadband set to dominate LatAm by 2022
Ultra-broadband will account for 75% of total internet connections by 2022 compared to the 36% forecast for 2017, according to recent research from Dataxis.
Dataxis expects next generation broadband connections to reach 25.6mn this year. The breakdown by technology for 2022 is expected to be 39% high-speed cable, 31% FTTH and 30% VDSL.
Ultra-broadband speeds in Latin America currently range from 20Mbps-200Mbps including FTTH, VDSL, VDSL2, VDSL2 +, Docsis 3.0 and Docsis 3.1. Chile and Mexico are the countries in the region with the highest speeds.
In terms of fixed broadband, Dataxis predicts that all fixed broadband connections (ADSL and cable modem) will reach 83.7mn by 2022, which would be 13.2% penetration compared to 70.9mn connections and 11.6% penetration in 2017.
Another recent report from Dataxis showed that fixed broadband connections reached 68.1mn in Latin America at the end of the first quarter of the year, increasing 5.9% year-on-year, with Brazil accounting for around 36% of those accesses.
