Workers at Peru's largest iron ore mine go on strike
Workers at Shougang Hierro Perú, the largest iron ore mine in Peru, started a strike after collective bargaining for the 2023-24 period failed.
The strike will last until August 29, according to a filing with securities regulator SMV.
The union calling for the strike represents around 1,000 of the mine’s 2,100 workers.
In late March, workers called a strike for the same reason. In September and October 2022, workers downed tools when collective bargaining hit a roadblock.
Still, Shougang's iron ore output grew 12.8% year-on year in June to 1.3Mt, and 16.5% to 7Mt in the first half. The Chinese-owned miner accounts for 98% of national production.
