Zacatecas developing plan to guarantee water supply for 50 years
The central Mexican state of Zacatecas is developing a plan to ensure stable water supply for at least the next 50 years.
The plan, which is due to cost 3.5bn pesos (US$209mn), will involve building two dams – known as Milpillas and San Andrés – on the Milpillas river, according to local media reports.
National water authority Conagua has approved a concession for the 47.3Mm3 Milpillas dam, while the concession for the 52.7mM3 San Andrés dam is expected to be approved next year.
Around 218,000 residents of Zacatecas suffer a lack of water, and it is estimated that by 2030 that figure will have risen to 379,000, according to data from the state government.
Conagua recently announced that it will implement six measures to ensure stable water supply for at least the next two years.
The agency said the measures seek to offset potential changes in the water cycle caused by global warming.
