The massive project consists of two open-pit mines: Chuquicamata and Mina Sur. While the project has been producing for more than a century, Codelco is continually progressing projects to continue production well into the future, including a US$2.83bn investment that is currently in feasibility study to mine resources underneath the current open-pit mine. Chuquicamata produces 528,377t of electrolytically refined and electrowon cathodes with a 99.99% copper purity. The mine also produces some 10,760t of molybdenum as well as other by-products, such as anode slimes and sulphuric acid. Mina Sur began operations in 1970 after oxide ore from the larger pit, Chuquicamata, became exhausted. It had originally operated at 30,000t/d but has since dropped to 18,000t/d.
