Alumina do Norte do Brasil S.A. (Alunorte) is a Brazilian firm engaged in the production and distribution of alumina. It operates the world's biggest aluminum refinery which, after completion of a third expansion in 2008, has capacity to produce over 6Mt/y of alumina. The company was founded in 1978, following an agreement between the governments of Brazil and Japan, and started operations in 1995. In 2010, it was acquired by Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro from its former owner, Brazilian firm Vale. Based in Barcarena, Pará state, Alumina exports its production to the Middle East, North America and Europe.
