Brazilian alumina refinery Alunorte engages in the production and distribution of alumina. Alunorte owns the world's biggest aluminum refinery. It is a significant part of the aluminum production chain in Brazil's Pará state, producing some 6.3Mt/y of aluminum. The company was founded in 1978 following an agreement between the governments of Brazil and Japan. As of February 28, 2011, the refinery operates as a subsidiary of Norway's Norsk Hydro.
