Chile's region V rail operator Metro Regional de Valparaiso (Merval) operates as a subsidiary of Chile's state-owned railway firm EFE. The company runs a railway from port city Valparaiso to the town of Limache. In 2009, Merval became one of EFE's autonomous subsidiaries. Its parent company decided to separate its passenger service division into subsidiaries to improve management and increase profit. Merval was founded in 1996 and is based in Viña del Mar, Chile.
