Mexico's environment and natural resources ministry Semarnat is the government body responsible for the protection, restoration and conservation of the country's ecosystems and natural resources, as well as pollution control, climate change prevention and water resource management. Semarnat is involved the construction and rehabilitation of potable water, sewage and sanitation systems in rural and urban areas; development of waste management strategies; wildlife conservation through the creation of federal protected areas, and the implementation of air quality management programs.
