Colombian mobile operator Colombia Telecomunicaciones S.A. E.S.P. (Movistar Colombia), the Colombian unit of Spain's Telefónica, launched operations in the country in 2004, taking over a client base formerly managed by BellSouth. The company migrated operations to GSM infrastructure in the same areas of the country in which it has CDMA coverage. Movistar also offers voice services, data transmission services and wireless broadband access. In 2013, the company was awarded a block in the AWS band for 198bn pesos. The Telefónica subsidiary must cover at least 255 municipal centers, provide 119,317 tablets and also participate in migrating the national police network to 4G. Movistar Colombia officially launched commercial LTE offerings in December 2013.
