BIESS, the bank of Ecuador's social security institute IESS, was founded on 11 May 2009 with a social and public service objective. Charged with investing Ecuadorians' social security savings, it provides financial services to meet the needs of IESS affiliates, both active affiliates and retirees, and manage workers' contributions. BIESS invests in both fixed and variable-income instruments offered in the local market, including instruments to finance long-term projects in the private and public sectors - such as infrastructure projects - that are profitable and generate new jobs. The bank also grants housing loans, unsecured and secured loans, and other financial services to IESS affiliates, both active and retirees. It is Ecuador's leading mortgage lender.
