Energy Program Contests Global Prize

Peru's Mines & Energy Ministry's energy saving program (PAE) is one of three finalists in the public and private initiatives category of the Global Energy Award 2001, minister Carlos Herrera said in a statement.

The PAE contributed to the fact that power demand rose only 10% from 1995 in the country's main electricity network, while the GDP increased 20% in the same period. The program changed the population's energy consumption habits, and reduced the consumption of an average Peruvian family by more than 15%.

The PAE began in October 1994 and was fundamental in overcoming the 1995-1996 power shortages without recourse to rationing, and surviving the energy crisis produced by events connected to the El Nino weather phenomenon, such as the destruction of the 100MW Machu Picchu plant in 1998, which wiped out 25% of the region's power generation, the statement said.
