Ecuador reached nearly 15mn mobile telephony subscribers at the end of December, compared with 13.3mn a year prior, local telecoms supervisory body Supertel said on its website.
According to the regulator, there were 12.9mn subscribers in the prepaid segment at end-December and 2.03mn post-paid users.
Porta, a unit of Mexican giant América Móvil (NYSE: AMX), continued to lead the market with 10.4mn subscribers, followed by Movistar Ecuador - controlled by Spain's Telefónica (NYSE: TEF) - with 4.2mn, and state-owned Alegro PCS - absorbed by state telecom operator CNT - with 301,576.
Number portability (NP) for mobile telephony in the country came into effect on October 12 last year. Supertel determined that subscribers may port their lines up to twice a year at no charge. Mobile telephony operators had received 66,717 NP requests by October 12, 2010, according to latest information provided by Supertel.
