Telco Tigo Paraguay, a subsidiary of Millicom, has launched the first datacenter in the Tier III category in the country.
The new facility, which is located in Villa Elisa in Central department, was built by Swedish firm Flexenclosure and certified by the Uptime Institute.
Alejandro Mikelj, B2B manager of Tigo Business, said the investments required for the datacenter amount to US$12mn. During a first phase, the facility will have 100 racks, while a second phase scheduled for 2018 will see the addition of 166 racks.
Some 21 companies have signed contracts to procure the facility's services, reported daily 5 Días. Juan Emilio Roa, director of Tigo Business, told paper Última Hora that Netflix and Google are two clients already using the datacenter's infrastructure.
The datacenter is providing housing and virtualization or cloud services. In the case of the former, clients can lease physical space to store their hardware while benefiting from the facility's electric power, refrigeration and connectivity.
"We see great opportunities to push the development of cloud and hosting services in Paraguay," Roa was quoted as saying by 5 Días.
Tigo has allocated US$617mn to its Paraguayan operations for the 2016-2020 period.
