San Martín will drill, load and haul some 22Mt of waste at the Marcona open pit operation, 500km south of Lima.

The deal continues San Martín's relationship with Shougang, who has hired the Lima-based contractor for two other jobs over the last 18 months. Currently San Martin moves in excess of 2.2Mt/month for three clients in four operations.

San Martín describes itself as the largest independent, wholly Peruvian-owned contract miner. It has four divisions; open pit mining, underground mining, exploration and civil works.

In March 2004 Shougang produced 383,590t of iron ore, a 20.2% increase over the same month last year, due to increased demand from China.
