US consolidates position as Chile's main gas supplier

The US accounted for 71.9% of Chile's natural gas imports in September, the latest month for which data is available, according to a report published Monday by the national energy commission CNE.

The remainder came from Trinidad and Tobago, which had been Chile's main supplier before the US began exporting LNG earlier this year.

Total natural gas imports rose 2.1% year-on-year in September, as output from Chile's thermal plants replaced declining hydropower amid historic drought.

The US overtook Trinidad as Chile's No. 1 gas supplier in August.
