Argentina's Internet users reached 2.5 million in February, according to the first local study by the Internet traffic measuring service Media Metrix Argentina.
Media Metrix Argentina launched officially last week as a joint venture between US-based Media Metrix (NASDAQ: JMXI) and local media rating firm Ipsos. It monitors a panel of 6,700 demographically selected Argentine Internet users.
Fifty-eight percent of the users were men and most belonged to affluent social groups, with 41.9% in the wealthiest ABC group. More than half of the users (57.7%) were economically active, while 31.4% were students.
Seventy-four percent accessed the Internet form their homes, while 14% also accessed it from somewhere else. The Argentines logged on for an average of 10.3 days per month, and spent an average of 567.5 minutes online per month.
The most visited sites are portals, which 89.6% of the users visited at least once a month. Other popular services are email, web hosting and online applications. The 15 most visited sites were headed by MSN.com, followed by Yahoo.com, ICQ Applications, Passport.com, Yahoo.com.ar, ICQ.com, Microsoft.com, Altavista.com, MNS Messenger Service, Napster Application, Ciudad.com.ar, Clarin.com, Lycos.com, Tutopia.com, El Sitio.com and UOL.com.ar.
