Venezuela's tax and customs agency Seniat has authorized incumbent telecommunications operator Cantv (NYSE: VNT) to bill customers online, Venezuela's e-commerce chamber Cavecom-e said in a newsletter.
Cantv clients will now be able to access their monthly telephone bills online or by e-mail, print them out, and pay by traditional means rather than waiting for the bill to arrive in the mail. Cantv expects to save time as well as mailing and printing costs.
"We expect petroleum producer PDVSA, power company Electricidad de Caracas or cement producer Cemex to follow [Cantv's] example," Cavecom-e board member and R&D director Jose Ali Vivas said.
Seniat's decision benefits only the residential sector so far, but once applied to B2B transactions it could help the import industry through online notaries and automated procedures at customs and port authorities.
