Argentina's software and IT services industry exports are expected to quadruple to US$3bn by 2020, industry minister Débora Giorgi was quoted as saying by media outlet Télam.

In addition, the minister forecasts US$7.4bn in total industry sales in the country by the same year.

"The national software industry has increased sales 210% since 2003, while exports have increased 290%," Giorgi said. Argentina's software industry is "a strategic sector and a basic tool for building an increasingly competitive industry."

According to the minister, one of Argentina's main advantages is the similarity of its time zone to those in North America and Europe - particularly beneficial for outsourcing services.

But the country still has room to improve in the availability and training of professionals, which would determine the industry's level of competitiveness, she added.
