Twelve companies have registered to produce tablets in Brazil, science and technology minister Aloizio Mercadante told the Agência Estado newswire.

The registered companies comprise Positivo, Envision, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Itautec, Sanmina, Foxconn, Compalead, Semp Toshiba, Aiox and MXT, Mercadante said.

Brazil's government issued a provisional decree (MP number 534) exempting tablets from the PIS and Cofins welfare taxes in the country's federal gazette, known as Diário Oficial da União. The prior tax was held at 9.25%.

Initially, exemption will be in effect for models that are at least 20% manufactured in Brazil. However, by 2014 the ratio is expected to reach 80%, Mercadante said.
