Claro Argentina launched a new roaming service, whereby subscribers will pay local rates when using voice data services in any country in the Americas.

The service is available to clients with prepaid plans starting at 490 pesos (US$32.2) and 5GB per month. Subscribers with plans of 290 pesos and 3GB can only use the service in Uruguay and Paraguay.

Fernando del Río, commercial director of Claro Argentina, said the company is seeking to expand the service to Europe as well.

"We see that users are desperate to maintain communications as they travel. The globalization of mobile telephony is an issue that is far from being solved anywhere in the world, local business daily El Cronista quoted del Río as saying.

According to El Cronista, 95% of Claro Argentina subscribers who travel do so within the Americas, with over 70% traveling to Uruguay, Chile and Brazil.

Last year, Claro Chile implemented a similar roaming plan with preferential rates for postpaid subscribers traveling to Argentina, Peru, and Colombia.
