As stock markets and commodity prices crashed and automotive companies pleaded for a bailout on Capitol Hill, companies in Latin America's power market adjusted plans for the future. Executives remain cautiously optimistic as demand will continue to grow for power, although more slowly than once thought if production falls in the region.
Brazilian officials were the most forthcoming about the crisis, reshaping forecasts and announcing changes to investment plans.
Case in point: The country's federal energy planning company EPE reduced its 2009 power demand forecast to 4.8% from 5.2% due to an anticipated slowdown in the economy. The adjustment follows a rethinking of 2009 GDP growth, which is now pegged at 4% and not 5% as originally anticipated.
