Work will involve dredging the port's access channel, as well as widening and deepening the channel connecting Bahía Blanca's Puerto de Ingeniero White and Puerto Galván terminals. With financing from Latin American development bank, CAF, the ultimate aim is to increase the port's draft to 50 feet (15.2m) from the current 45 feet.
The new draft is expected to allow vessels to sail unrestricted, while the widening of two waterways seeks to make better use of docks located at the farthest end of Puerto Galván.
A consortium comprised of Dutch service company Boskalis and Belgian service company Jan de Nul, through Compañía Sudamericana de Dragado, is in charge of the works.
