The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries of Trinidad and Tobago (MEEI) contributes to the sustainable development of energy and mineral resources; it is responsible for the strategic development and management of the oil, gas and minerals nationwide; and it is in charge of the monitoring, control and regulation of the power and mining sectors. The MEEI is in charge of renting of allocating licenses for the exploration and production of oil; regulating and managing activities for the development of the oil & gas industry; regulating and managing offshore oil refining operations; managing oil products, transmission of natural gas and manufacture of petrochemicals; formulating and implementing legal instruments for the oil industry; acquire, analyze and communicate information about the domestic oil industry; collect, together with the Ministry of Finance, the earnings of the State; representing the interests of Trinidad & Tobago in oil forums and international institutions; long term planning, development and implementing policies in the oil sector; sharing the management of interests and assets of the State in the oil & gas industry; and sharing responsibilities on the administration and management of the mining sector. MEEI was founded in 1904 and it is headquartered in Port of Spain.
