At a glance: El Salvador's telecommunications market

Figures from El Salvador telecom regulator Siget for the third quarter show growth in broadband, mobile telephony and pay TV, while fixed telephony remains constant.

The main players in the market are Tigo, Claro, Movistar and Digicel.

The El Salvador telecommunications market ended September with 11.2mn mobile lines, up from 10.6mn at the same time last year.

Prepaid continues to be the main modality used by Salvadorans with 9.92mn lines. Postpaid was flat at 1.32mn lines.

Of the mobile lines, just over 6mn have access to data services and only 4.6mn correspond to subscribers with access to 4G broadband services.

4G mobile coverage remained at 92% of the population but 3G increased from 92% to 94%.

Fixed broadband lines reached 650,146 compared to 597,880 a year earlier.

The Siget report highlights progress in all technologies, including those that use copper networks, such as DSL and cable modem.

According to the report, as of end-September El Salvador had 225,847 broadband connections via cable modem, 412,507 via DSL and 11,592 via fiber optics.

Wireless (mobile) broadband subscriptions reached 920,243, up from 681,012 in September 2021.

Most Salvadorans connect at a speed of between 2Mbps and 10Mbps (377,803 subscribers), with 201,234 accessing connections in the range of 10Mbps to 100Mbps, Siget said.

There were 610,929 pay TV subscribers as of end-September compared to 561,435 a year earlier.

More than half, 356,915, were cable TV subscribers and 253,564 satellite TV subscribers. Only 450 had contracted IPTV services.

Fixed telephony lines stood at 2.88mn.
