Brazilian mining regulator asks govt for additional staff

Bnamericas

Brazilian mining regulator ANM has asked the government for more staff to be able to provide adequate services.

ANM’s director, Mauro Sousa, made a request to the mines and energy ministry for the hiring of more professionals on top of what has already been authorized, a person with knowledge of the matter told BNamericas, declining to be named for this article.

In July, the government gave ANM the green light to hire 220 additional staff. The notice authorizing the hiring is expected to be published in December and ANM is now looking to increase that number before the publication of the notice, the source said.

According to union leaders, ANM only has a third of the staff considered ideal for performing its main tasks.

Besides supervising mining operations, it is also in charge of sector fees and tax collection.

Due to ANM oversight failures from 2014 to 2021, federal audit court TCU recently estimated that the government received 16.4bn reais (US$2.8bn) less in taxes due to non-payment of the CFEM mining royalty.
