BNDES clears US$68.6mn transmission line loan

Brazil's national development bank BNDES has approved a 170mn-real (US$68.6mn) loan to the Artemis Transmissora consortium to build a 353kV, 372km transmission line in southern Brazil, BNDES said in a statement on Monday. The whole project is budgeted at 283mn reais. Artemis signed the build-and-operate contract in 2004 after winning a 2003 auction for the line by offering annual revenues of 41.7mn reais. Spanish company Cymi owns 51% of the consortium, federally owned Brazilian power company Eletrosul owns 46.5% and Brazilian company Santa Rita Comércio e Engenharia Ltda owns the remaining 2.5%. The line will cut across 17 municipalities to link the town of Cascavel to Salto Santiago in Paraná state. The project includes expansion of the three existing substations along the line. The link is considered essential to strengthen the southern region's network.
