Hotel owners vie for Rio Hato runway property

Bnamericas
The owners of Panama's Hotel Decameron have expressed interest in reaching an agreement with the government to obtain the land where the current Rio Hato airport runway lies, the Panama America reported. Hotel manager Jorge Loaiza was quoted as saying the intention is to continue development of tourist infrastructure, some of which is not possible due to the close proximity of the local airport. Loaiza suggested the government relocate the runway in order to provide more advanced technology and not restrict the hotel industry. The airport made news recently when ex-civil aviation directorate (DAC) director Jaime Fabrega said the runways may suffer "irreversible" damages due to auto races held there, BNamericas previously reported. The Rio Hato airport has been suggested as an alternative for the Tocumen international airport. Panama does not currently have an alternative to Tocumen and must divert aircraft to Cartagena, Colombia when the runways are closed down.
