The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a US$46.5mn loan for Brazilian municipality Belo Horizonte's US$77mn river basin remediation and recovery program Drenurbs, the bank announced Wednesday. The program will be carried out in eight water basins. Works will include rain drainage, sewerage, erosion, riverbank stabilization and dredging projects. Drenurbs will benefit close to 1 million residents as well as 140km of waterways into which untreated sewage and waste are currently dumped. The program falls under the city's urban drainage master plan - Plan Diretor de Drenaje Urbano - that kicked off in 1999. Belo Horizonte is the capital of Minas Gerais state and has some 2.2 million residents.
